“How can we come alongside your life in a meaningful way?”
This is the question a houseless gentleman living in Ventura California was asked in the early 2000s. His response, “If I had clean clothes I think people would treat me like a human being.”, would inspire the creation of Laundry Love—an initiative that has assisted thousands of families across the nation. The Laundry Love initiative consists of regular opportunities to come alongside people who are struggling financially by assisting them with their laundry. Laundry Love partners with groups and local laundromats in cleaning clothes and linens of low-income or no-income families and individuals.
The local chapter of Laundry Love has offered laundry love to neighbors in need in its three locations every month for the past ten years. Don’t Look Away: Homelessness in Northwest Arkansas
On Tuesday, February 5th, All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Bentonville Arkansas is showing a student-produced documentary that examines issues facing the homeless in Northwest Arkansas. Over the course of two semesters, the graduate students crafted stories that give viewers a chance to understand both the unique challenges and complicated stories of this population. The screening will be followed by table and group discussions that seeks to identify ways our community can work together to address the issue. If you’re able, the organizers have asked for attendees bring a new blanket or sleeping bag that will be distributed to the area homeless. While this is an opportunity to be in the company of likeminded people ready to take action, you can also view the documentary online. Facebook event details can be found HERE.

Canopy Northwest Arkansas is working to support refugees who are resettling in our community. Vital to carrying out that mission, are the local co-sponsors that partner with Canopy to help the refugee families integrate into the community. The co-sponsor teams (8 to 12 volunteers) commit to spending at least 20 hours a month with the refugee family for at least 4-6 months after they arrive. These team can be formed by your workplace, your school, your church—or just a group of your friends. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, Canopy is hosting their next co-sponsor training on February 2nd, 2019. To sign up, email Lauren Snodgrass at lauren.snodgrass@canopynwa.org. You can find more information about the co-sponsorship program HERE. Learn more about Canopy below.
